May 29: And So We Rest

Dear families,

Happy Memorial Day weekend! I hope this is a restful, joyous holiday for your family. We’re wrapping up our series on the creation story from Genesis with our preschoolers, and the lessons of resilience from the Bible in our elementary classes.

At the close of the allegorical “week” of creation, God looked at everything He had made — it was very good — and He rested. This is what God invites us into: the importance of rest. It’s His gift to us. Before we do any of the work He asks us to participate in, a Sabbath rest is vital to prepare for the good things to come. Likewise, Adam and Eve were about to begin the work of naming and caring for all of life on Earth. But first, God shows us how we rest.

That’s true with resilience, as well. When things are difficult, we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again. And the best way to prepare for those moments is to rest in God’s goodness! May this weekend (and the upcoming summer holiday) bring a renewed promise of rest — from a God who loves us very much — to you and your family.

With love,
Miss Elisa
